Scope vs budget

Delivering projects within budget is a very challenging mission in the current economic scene with many having to reduce scope of works. The constraints that water companies battle with are threefold: project budget, the tasks involved to fulfil the project and the schedule for the project completion.

For Sulzer – experts in water and wastewater solutions, it means helping the customer to strike the balance between the best solution within the capital costs and timeframe. One of their customers – a UK Water Treatment Works, located in West Midlands, is a large potable water plant, fed with raw water from a local reservoir. The plant is undergoing a modernisation program led by a UK contractor with a long-established reputation within the water sector.

Addressing the challenge of long lead times and increased costs

Sulzer worked with the contractor to develop a commercially effective solution. With ever rising costs, it was difficult for the customer to meet the scope of works within budget. Sulzer provided a robust solution whilst also reducing CAPEX and risk with improved lead time.

Wastewater solution in clean water application

Sulzer offered an alternative – 10 pumps from their XFP submersible range. They are, in principle, designed to pump raw solids from one place to another when gravity alone cannot do the job. In clean water environment they would not be the obvious and first choice. However, Sulzer adapted them to suit customer requirements while conforming to the industry standards.

Sulzer supplied 6 XFP DN300-DN400 interstage pumps with premium-efficiency IE3 motors with control and monitoring equipment, packed with innovative features built-in as standard: moisture monitoring module CA 441, temperature monitoring module CA 442, graphical operator interface CA 551 and pump controller PC 441. They have many advanced features to minimize costs in the pumping station throughout its entire life cycle. In addition to that, 4 XFP backwash submersible pumps were also installed with temperature and leakage relay CA 462.

Sulzer provided an innovative solution using special approved coatings which allowed the submersible pumps to be applied in a clean environment. The whole point of doing it was to guarantee that it wouldn’t give an undesirable flavour or colour to water, pass on toxic chemicals, or create conditions in which bacteria could grow.

In water industry there are no grey areas. Products, services and solutions are applied with the guarantee that an application will not cause waste, misuse, excessive consumption or contamination of the water supply.

All 10 pumps underwent a rigorous testing on their mechanics and interaction with water to be fit for the application and fulfil the task.
