Work recently began on site as part of £1.4m investment by Yorkshire Water to upgrade a combined storm overflow (CSO) in Park Hill, near Sheffield, a move that will reduce storm discharges into the River Don.
The project to improve water quality in the Don, includes rebuilding the storm overflow upstream of the current site, new manholes, upgrading equipment and pipework and increasing capacity of the network. This will allow greater retention of stormwater caused by wet weather events within the sewer network during rainfall events, which will transfer through the network to be fully treated.
Lumi Ajayi, project manager, Yorkshire Water said:
“This is one of a number of large-scale infrastructure projects around Sheffield and south Yorkshire, part of our £180m investment by April 2025, to reduce storm overflows and improve water quality across the region.
“On completion, the £1.4m of investment will reduce the frequency of storm discharges flowing into the river Don by 48% from this asset. Our five-year plan will see further infrastructure investment, with £1.5bn set aside to reduce storm overflows and improve water quality in 2025-2030.”
