Water company’s fleet of tankers hit clean fuel milestone

The team behind Northumbrian Water’s Bioresources fleet of tankers are celebrating a new milestone. They recently surpassed their millionth litre of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel used to power the lorries. These one million litres add up to a saving of approximately 2.5million kgs of CO2.

HVO fuel offers a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel fuel, significantly reducing harmful emissions such as Nitrogen Oxide and particulate matter.

Following a successful trial in 2021, HVO fuel was adopted across the Bioresources fleet in November 2022 and is currently used across 17 heavy goods vehicles.

Switching the fleet over to HVO fuel goes some way to improve local air quality, especially in urban areas, and also aligns to Northumbrian Water’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions to help meet the UK’s target for Net Zero by 2050.

Fortunately, the HVO fuel is compatible with the existing refuelling infrastructure, which allows for seamless integration and ease of use for our fleet operators. The cleaner option plays a key role in diversifying the fuel mix and reducing the dependence on finite fossil fuels.

The renewable fuel contributes to the development of a more sustainable energy ecosystem while supporting local economies and fostering innovation in the Biofuel sector.

Ben Connolly, Northumbrian Water Group’s Transport Manager, said:

“As we pivot towards a more sustainable future, the transition to alternative fuels has become critical, especially for fleet operators and we are very proud to have hit our millionth litre of HVO fuel.

“In an uncertain landscape of evolving fuel technologies, HVO fuel stands out as a vital component in facilitating this transition. It offers a number of benefits that satisfy both environmental and operational challenges and supports our commitment to Net Zero”.
