Thames Water says it regards all untreated sewage discharges as unacceptable, even when they are permitted

In response to Ofwat’s proposal to fine three water companies as part of the first batch of outcomes from its biggest ever investigation, Thames Water has said it regards all untreated discharges as unacceptable, even when they are permitted.

The water company was hit with the biggest fine of the the three, at a proposed £104m, compared to £47m for Yorkshire Water and £17m for Northumbrian.

The water company, already in financial trouble, pointed out that in order to resolve the issues identified in the investigation, any redress needs to be ‘deliverable, affordable and financeable’.

The investigation by the Environment Agency into all water and wastewater companies in England and Wales continues. Currently, there is no indication of any date for this investigation to reach a conclusion.
