IEMA responds to Liberal Democrats manifesto

Sarah Mukherjee, CEO for the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA), which represents almost 22,000 environment and sustainability professionals, has responded to the launch by the Liberal Democrats of their 2024 manifesto.

Sarah Mukherjee, IEMA CEO, said: “Green skills and training for the UK’s workforce is a key issue for IEMA members. The Lib Dems mention growing jobs for the green economy at least five times in their manifesto, linked to industrial strategy and climate targets.

“The party also highlights the need to grow green skills – recognising the value of training, both for young people and for older people, so they can transition into the green economy.

“Green jobs in the UK are growing nearly four times faster than overall UK employment. But there is a green skills gap looming because the growth in green talent is not keeping up.

“If unaddressed, the green skills shortage will compromise efforts to achieve legally-binding carbon and environmental targets. Taking action now will also mean that workers currently employed in the fossil fuels sector can transition into clean energy roles.”
