Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been rated ‘excellent’ for its site practices on a multi-million-pound coastal defence scheme.
The Ruthin-based firm’s activity to deliver £7.5m of shoreside improvements at Penrhyn Bay to reduce beach erosion has been scored by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).
The organisation aims to raise standards in construction by ensuring contractors are responsibly carrying out builds through an independent and rigorous monitoring process, which rates projects on their consideration for the environment, community, and workforce.
Businesses provide site access to monitors, who then mark the development out of 45 across the three sections.
Jones Bros received 15, a perfect score, in both the ‘respect the community’ and ‘value their workforce’ categories, as well as averaging 14.5 for ‘care for the environment’ across two independent CCS visits.
As part of the process, the civil engineering company has also been applauded for its local engagement in Conwy from the outset of the activity, delivering on biodiversity plans and investing in health and wellbeing support for employees and apprentices.
Senior contracts manager Dafydd Ellis said: “It’s brilliant to receive such a positive outcome from the report, particularly as we put such a huge organisational focus on bringing benefits to the communities and environment in the areas in which we work.
“We try to take everything into account; from mental health support for employees, to reducing our machinery’s fuel consumption and inviting school children to see the scheme in action.
“We are so pleased to have this project recognised as a shining example of excellent standards in the construction industry.”
CCS monitor Paul Senior added: “Jones Bros is clearly committed to all the elements required to be a considerate constructor; prioritising the community and environment, as well as caring for its workforce, with many directly employed by the firm after joining as apprentices.
“Scoring so highly across all three areas in such a demanding project reflects very positively on both the company’s work and the industry as a whole.”
Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.
The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.
The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
