Work has finished on a £3.4m sewer upgrade to help protect the environment in and around a North East beauty spot.
Northumbrian Water and its partner, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), have increased the capacity of the sewer network and added underground storage tanks at Castle Eden Dene, near Peterlee, in County Durham.
This work will help sewage flows to be managed at times of heavy rainfall, protecting the environment from the risk of pollution. Teams remain on site completing the reinstatement of the working areas and carrying out grass seeding.
David Groark, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said:
“This work will help to protect Castle Eden Dene by increasing the capacity of our combined sewer network, reducing the likelihood of heavy rainfall causing problems.
“We’ve worked closely with Peterlee Town Council, Peterlee Cricket Club and Durham County Council on this project, as well as with customers, to minimise any impact, and we would like to thank everyone for their support throughout our ten months on site.”
