Water company named as one of the best workplaces for women for second year in a row

Northumbrian Water (Essex & Suffolk) is officially one of the best workplaces for women – according to a survey by Great Place to Work.

The water company has been recognised by Great Place to Work as one of the Best Workplaces™ for women – achieving 29th position in the Super Large Category.

The only water and sewerage company to make the list, Northumbrian Water (Essex & Suffolk) is among 330 organisations celebrated for creating an inclusive and positive environment.

It is feedback from employees themselves which has led to the accolade, sharing their workplace experiences and opinions on how well represented women are across the organisation. The business says it is committed to attract, retain and develop the best people, as well as embracing the diversity of the communities it serves.

Going from strength to strength, Northumbrian Water’s WiSTEM (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) network, aims to help women in their careers and encourage them to become mentors to girls in STEM.

The network has focused on creating collaboration and supporting young women in their careers, resulting in increased applications to STEM roles and successful internal appointments within Operational Management roles.

In addition, the water company has built upon the existing female led health group which was set up in 2022.

There has been a continued focus on issues impacting women including, mental health, fertility, menopause and personal safety. The business has worked with high profile speakers, such as Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Kim McGuiness, to highlight and create greater awareness around women’s safety, joining the Domestic Abuse Champions scheme.

Elouise Leonard-Cross, Head of People Strategy and Experience, said:

“Being named as a Great Place to Work for Women for the second year in a row is testament to our amazing team. We are committed to creating a working environment that’s inclusive and fair for everyone, so, we are absolutely delighted with this announcement.

“Being recognised nationally as a top employer alongside other big names like Santander, Deloitte and Vodafone is a remarkable achievement and we are extremely honoured to be part of the list. Every day, our aim is to celebrate and empower our people to reach their full potential, no matter who they are or what they do.

“Our work to support women, not just in their careers, but in their mental and physical health too, sets us apart from the rest, and I’m enormously proud of the amazing people we have working here who show overwhelming support for these networks, helping us to build a great workplace for all of us.”
