Pump Supplies launches new range of eel friendly pumps

Pump Supplies, the owner and operator of the UK’s largest hire fleet of electric submersible pumps and accessories, has launched a new range of eel friendly pumps.

Within UK or EU water bodies, the protection of eels and other small fish life has increasingly become a priority for effective fisheries management. Eel populations have plummeted in recent decades and the 2015 Eel Regulations require companies who abstract and use raw water to ensure that their activity enables at least 40% eel ‘escapement’.

Pump Supplies has developed a high flow electric submersible filter pump, working with a leading filter technology company, which promotes the safety of eels and fish life in raw water environments. The 316 Stainless Steel RF800LW, which pumps 86 l/s, 0.1m/sec velocity, together with the RF600LW eel screen, requires little or no civil engineering or groundwork to install, and when submerged for use have minimal visual impact on the natural environment.

Pump Supplies’ managing director, Peter Lewington, said:

“Anyone pumping more than 20m3 of water per day from rivers, lakes and reservoirs must ensure that measures are in place to protect eels and elvers, meaning there’s a need for new technology within the industry. Using our eel-friendly submersible pumps, which have integral self-cleaning intake screens, up to 150m3/ hour of dirty water can be pumped effectively, reducing the risk of blockages and potential damage.”

The Flygt pumps comply with the industry’s eel regulations and Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act, using a 2mm mesh and low intake velocity, and the self-cleaning mechanism ensures the mesh stays clear, ensuring an efficient job every time. They’re commonly used within river intake systems but can also be used within other industries such as flooding and quarrying, especially those dealing with raw water – whether salt or fresh water.
