ByrneLooby celebrates highly commended award for Blanchardstown Regional Drainage Scheme

ByrneLooby, an Ayesa Company, has announced that the Blanchardstown Regional Drainage Scheme in which it was appointed as a Consulting Engineer and Lead Designer has won a highly commended award in the Infrastructure category at the Irish Concrete Society’s 40th Annual Awards.

The project was evaluated by an independent awards jury panel and recognized for its innovative design and execution, contributing to sustainability and resilience in Ireland’s capital city. Blanchardstown Regional Drainage Scheme received its award for outstanding performance and significant contributions to overcoming the strain on the wastewater and stormwater networks in Dublin’s growing commuter belt. This recognition highlights the commitment and collaboration of multiple stakeholders in delivering this transformative water project in Ireland’s capital.

The project invested approximately €88 million by Irish water utility – Uisce Eireann (Irish Water) to expand and upgrade the capacity of the existing sewer network with 3.2km of new wastewater network.

The project addressed flooding and wastewater capacity issues in Dublin using an economical and innovative design of circular concrete tanks and tunnels. These massive underground storage tanks have a combined storage capacity of approximately 30,000m³ and over 3.2km of tunnels were created using trenchless tunnelling techniques to minimise the impact on the motorway, communities, and the environment. This project significantly contributes to modern water and wastewater infrastructure development, helping to transform Dublin and protect habitats and ecosystems, resulting in cleaner beaches and healthier seas.

Graham Stevenson, Director of Water ByrneLooby-Ayesa, said:

“We are delighted to receive this award demonstrating our partnership approach and commitment to delivering better outcomes for our clients. This project will transform this growing commuter belt region, and we are proud to play a part in this regeneration.”
