Competition and Markets Authority closes investigation into the Veolia / Suez merger

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced the closure of its investigation into the Veolia / Suez merger, after Veolia completed all of the divestitures required under the CMA’s final report.

In the final remedy decision published last year, the CMA accepted the proposal for the divestment of Suez’s UK waste business, Veolia’s European mobile water services business and Suez’s UK industrial water operation and maintenance business, before the merger could be agreed.

Veolia completed the sale of all three divestment businesses to purchasers approved by the CMA by: divesting Suez’s UK waste business to ‘New Suez’ on 5 December 2022; divesting Veolia’s European mobile water services business to Saur on 30 November 2022; and Suez’s UK industrial water operation and maintenance business to Saur on 15 February 2023.
