Shooting for sustainability at Worcester International Hockey Club

The historically nomadic Worcester Hockey Club needed a state-of-the-art facility to offer the team a place to lay its hockey sticks and set it up for the future.

Founded in 1892, the longstanding club was more than ready for its own space and required a purpose-built clubhouse to serve its members and supporters.

With roots in the local community, the club’s new building was planned as a joint venture with the Royal Grammar School in Worcester. Tasked with the job of creating the new hockey pavilion, modular building developer Blossom Homes looked to establish a sustainable space that would nurture fledgling field players, as well as support hockey at both a local and international level.

Comprising eight changing rooms with shower facilities and a club room with a kitchen, the new pavilion needed to withstand large volumes of water at one given time, especially following matches and training sessions. Products from leading plumbing and drainage manufacturer Wavin were specified throughout the building to help provide an efficient system, that was robust and resilient enough to manage the high demand.

Modern methods of construction

Known for using a modular approach when building residential properties, Blossom Homes was eager to apply its method to a commercial space. This new challenge allowed the developer to showcase the extent to which modular construction can be utilised and the wider sustainability benefits that it has in commercial builds. Calling on plumbing specialists, Wavin, the Blossom team knew its products could meet both the quality and sustainability credentials required for the build.

In order to facilitate a faster installation, the team selected the Tigris K1 press fit system, that was well suited to the building’s primary circulation system. This high-performance, composite pipe system can be swiftly installed saving both money and time.

Steve Kerrigan, System Designer at Blossom Homes, said:

“Our longstanding relationship with Wavin, the availability of its products and their sustainable credentials made it the obvious choice when it came to supplying the club’s water management systems. We’ve previously worked with Wavin products on our flagship semi-detached house build and were confident that the quality products were ideally suited to a commercial build and would support us with our sustainability targets.”

A supported and sustainable build

The Wavin team was on hand to support Blossom Homes at every step of the project, providing installation training, technical information and consultation where required. This high level of service from the outset of the project allowed contractors to confidently work with products, reducing delays and keeping the project on track.

To support the building of a sustainable space for Worcester Hockey Club, Wavin provided lifetime assessments for all products. This crucial information ensured that Blossom Homes could form a full picture of the project from the planning stage, understanding the environmental impact of each component throughout the building’s lifetime.

Elsewhere in the project, Wavin Osma Compact Soil and Waste systems were installed to provide a comprehensive solution to manage wastewater. These high-performance pipes are produced with Recycore technology, which uses the highest amount of recycled PVC possible, without compromising on quality. Featuring a small, compact design the pipe can be installed in a flexible way that saves space when the installation site is limited. With the inclusion of unique self-sealing waste valves that prevent the escape of foul sewer air, users of the pavilion can have confidence that the new space will be a pleasant space for players and visitors to enjoy.

Keith Beverley, Key Account Manager at Wavin, commented:

“To support Blossom Homes on the development of a sustainable commercial build was incredibly exciting for us. At Wavin, we understand the importance of sustainability within the built environment, and our systems are designed to support projects meet their net zero targets. With the success of this prototype build, we look forward to seeing how modular builds can support the sector in becoming more sustainable and are happy to have Wavin products help make this possible.”
