Severn Trent, one of Britain’s largest water companies supplying over 4 million people, has announced that they have joined the Energy Efficiency Movement.
Launched in March 2021 by ABB, the #energyefficiencymovement is a multi-stakeholder initiative to raise awareness and initiate action to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions to combat climate change. Companies are invited to join the movement and make a public pledge as a way of inspiring others to take action.
Severn Trent has committed to achieving net zero operational emissions by 2030 by following the carbon hierarchy. This approach prioritises solutions to reduce energy use and direct emissions first, followed by replacing or removing emissions, with offsetting a last resort – adopted only when residual emissions cannot be removed.
David Hughes, Country Manager, ABB in the UK said:
“It is a pleasure to partner with Severn Trent on the Energy Efficiency Movement. With every new organisation who joins this initiative we strengthen our impact on leading the way for a cleaner future.”
David continued: “Severn Trent are innovators in helping to achieve greener operations in the UK’s water infrastructure. Their recently announced trial of ozone disinfectant to revolutionise the future use of wastewater treatment, a UK first, is a good example of their broader commitment to building a more sustainable future.”
Howard Perry, Severn Trent’s Energy Manager added:
“Severn Trent is a major energy user and takes energy management seriously. We have a dedicated team and resource focused on making our assets and processes more efficient which saves us money and keeps customers’ water bills low. Continual focus on energy efficiency is the key to keeping our grid reliable, saving cost, and cutting carbon.”
As part of their ambition to enable a low-carbon society, ABB are partnering with customers, suppliers, and other leading organizations to reduce emissions across the value chain. To achieve carbon neutrality in their own operations, they have committed to three initiatives of the Climate Group of global companies. By 2030, they will electrify their fleet of more than 10,000 vehicles, source 100% of their electricity from renewables, and improve energy efficiency across their operations.
