Stantec and the Rivers Trust to develop CIRIA guidance for blue-green infrastructure asset management

CIRIA has appointed Stantec and the Rivers Trust in a partnership to develop high level guidance and principles for the asset management of Blue-Green Infrastructure. The guidance will provide a common and consistent approach to the collection and analysis of data about the performance, value, costs and risks associated with Blue-Green Infrastructure measures.

The aim of the project is to collaboratively understand the functionality of Blue-Green Infrastructure and assess how existing frameworks can underpin effective asset management. The Stantec-Rivers Trust team will bring together different disciplines from various organisations to share their knowledge and experience of delivering and managing Blue-Green Infrastructure interventions with experts in asset management.

Prof. Chris Digman, executive technical director at Stantec said: “We are delighted to be supporting CIRIA in delivering this critical project. With the growing use and inclusion of Blue-Green Infrastructure and nature-based solutions to manage water, the good management of these assets is essential to delivering the desired sustainable long-term outcomes for our communities and the environment.”

David Johnson, technical director of the Rivers Trust commented: “Blue-Green Infrastructure is a key component of healthy river catchments which are valued and enjoyed by those who live in them. It needs to be respected, managed and maintained in a similar way to the engineered infrastructure we also rely on. This CIRIA project will provide guidance to help create these outcomes.”

Louise Walker, CIRIA senior research manager said: ‘We are delighted to be working with the Stantec and the Rivers Trust team to deliver this much needed project. Our partnership exemplifies how industry, the third sector and communities can work together to deliver real and positive change to places. We hope this guide will be the go-to for those looking to manage blue-green assets.”
